Lie #1

It’s who you know

Everyone walks around saying, “It’s who you know.”

That’s their opinion. That’s their analysis!

If you know somebody in a position of power over in that business, in that family… If you know somebody who knows somebody, then you’re luckier and can sell faster than other coaches.

It’s all about your connections. It’s all about your contacts.

But great coaching careers are not that shallow. They’re not built on precarious cynicism. This is not a house of cards.

Sure, to a certain degree it is valuable to know people in the community, or to know a lot of people in a certain business, but that only gives you a small head start.

It’s not the whole picture. It’s not even very important. And it’s certainly not the end‑all.

But that’s how people try to portray it.

In the end, it’s not who you know—that’s not the most important thing. In the end the most important thing is what you can do.

If you can help me, do I really need to “know” you, or know whether you went to Harvard Business School, or know if your father knows my father?

People who enroll clients successfully don’t need to be shallow publicity seekers. They drop all their worry about status and credentials and instead start to get close to their prospects.

They get right into the coaching.
